With the post position draw coming soon for the Kentucky Derby, I
thought I'd share some statistics for each post position. The Derby has
been limited to 20 starters since 1975 and the below table outlines the number
of starts, wins, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes in each post. Post 20
oftentimes gets a bad rap but is actually the second best place to be in terms
of percentage with a 13% win rate and 25% in the money. However, that's
based on a small sample size of eight.
Five slots have never produced a winner, with post #17 the worst of all
with only a 3% in the money percentage and 6% in the superfecta.
