Arch Traveler faces tall order in Florida// Borel to watch Derby on TV?// Joe’s Blazing Aaron latest to muddy Derby waters

Summary:
Old-school trainer Jimmy Jerkens explains the breed has changed in current thoroughbreds.  That’s why he’s doing what was once unthinkable by elevating Arch Traveler from an entry-level allowance to Grade 1 company in Sunday’s Florida Derby.  It won’t be just any Grade 1 company either - the small field will include 4 horses on most experts’ top 10 Derby lists// Expect more buzz about Calvin Borel and his Derby mount situation (or lack thereof) as the Derby draws closer.  The winner of 3 of the last 4 “Run For The Roses” is currently hoping Elite Alex can get the earnings in Arkansas, or he and his agent will have to campaign for Brethren, J P’s Gusto, or Astrology// Bob Baffert seems to “mull” a lot.  Not that you can fault him.  His last minute decisions on where his horse will go or which jockey will ride usually payoff.  He’s deciding between The Wood Memorial or Santa Anita Derby for Jaycito// Joe’s Blazing Aaron, winner of the Palm Beach Stakes on turf, has switched barns to Mike Maker and will try to get in the Derby through the back door.  If he finishes first or second in the Blue Grass Stakes he will go to the Derby sporting an atrocious dirt record of 7-1-0-0.  That 1 is from a Maiden Claiming// more…
