Scratches inevitable in Risen Star, Fountain of Youth// Uncaptured thriving// Rebel gets early probables// more…

Summary:
There is a good possibility neither of Al Stall’s runners will enter the gate for the Risen Star (G2) on Saturday. Sunbean will most likely go in the undercard Gentilly Stakes on the grass, while Stall mentioned there needs to be quite a few scratches to bring Departing closer to the rail from his outside post// The Fountain of Youth (G2) is also guaranteed a scratch with news that Sky Captain will instead go in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway or Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct March 2. Trainer Mark Casse didn’t like the 7 post due to the speed bias and short run to the first turn at Gulfstream// Casse also mentioned that Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner Uncaptured is doing very well and will start next in the Spiral (G3) at Turfway. Uncaptured breezed four furlongs at Ocala Training Center yesterday and Casse said he galloped out another furlong all in 1:00// Next race plans are already set for some Southwest (G3) runners who had to deal with the mud flying behind dominating winner Super Ninety Nine Monday. Always in a Tiz, who was found to have a lung infection following his fifth in the race, will point for the Rebel as will 9th place finisher Texas Bling// The Rebel will also get undefeated Park City, whose honest owner said “Derby Fever” played a part in the aggressive placement for the recent allowance winner// more…

Setback for Frac Daddy// Orb may go to Fountain of Youth// Fortify making 3YO debut Thursday in Dubai// Baffert looking to invade Southwest again// New rankings// more…

Summary:
The Derby trail is treacherous and trainer Kenny McPeek knows that all too well. The trainer tweeted this morning that Frac Daddy has an ulcer in his throat and needs a little time off. How much time is open to debate, as apparently two veterinarians suggested varying degrees of rest- 4 to 10 days. Frac Daddy already had the issue of a bad cut on his hoof from the Holy Bull// Fortify, 4th last time out in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), was entered in the U.A.E. 2,000 Guineas to be held Thursday in Dubai. His last three races were in defeat to champion Shanghai Bobby, but at Meydan he’ll face another champion- this one from South Africa- in Soft Falling Rain. If history is any indication, the chances of Fortify returning in good form to the States, much less at all, are slim// Sounds like Shug McGaughey is stuck between a rock and a hard place due to timing with recent allowance winner Orb, who will most likely go next in the Fountain of Youth (G2) Feb 23 at Gulfstream// The Oaklawn track must be somewhat slow in the mornings, as Always in a Tiz worked 5-furlongs in 1.02:20, 7th fastest of 32. He’s pointing for the Southwest (G3) and should like the added distance// Big Lute, probable for the Rebel (G2) March 16, fired the bullet for 4-furlongs in a quick 47 flat, with the next fastest time of 43 horses at 47:80// It looks like Bob Baffert is aiming to invade the Southwest Stakes again based on a strong hint that recent Santa Anita allowance winner Super Ninety Nine will ship in. Last year Baffert won both sides of a double running of the race// Quite a few new rankings released Monday, including lists from the AP, Steve Haskin, Jerry Bossert, and the Courier Journal// more…

Odds set for Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1// Always in a Tiz returning to Oaklawn// Demonic trying to make the grade// more…

Summary:
The big Derby related news for Wednesday was the release of the first pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. ‘All Others’ were installed as the favorite at 9-5 with Shanghai Bobby and Violence the co-favorites of the individual selections at 12-1. Scanning the entire selection list, it’s hard to get excited about any of them. Not only are most of the odds equal or worse than what they will be for the same horses Derby Day (if they make it), the entire concept of taking a horse sub 50-1 in February presents too much of a risk in my opinion. Jennie Rees pointed out Pletcher and Baffert have 10 of the 23 individual betting interests in the pool. For a full list of selections, odds, and a link to PPs, see below// With the news that Always in a Tiz will return to Oaklawn for the Southwest Feb 18, the top three finishers of the Smarty Jones Stakes are ensured of a rematch. Less than a length separated all three, while Always in a Tiz appeared to be just finding his stride while crossing the wire. His connections feel the added distance in the Southwest will only help// Demonic, a maiden winner by a head in early January at Santa Anita, is pointed for either the 7-furlong San Vicente (G2) Feb 17 or the 1 1/16 mile San Felipe (G2) both at Santa Anita// Belvin, a Bob Baffert maiden winner from December, worked five furlongs in 59:20, fastest of 52// more…

Shanghai Bobby on the rail in Holy Bull, will face 9// Clawback to stretch out// Excuses for Smarty Jones also-rans// Flashback works

Summary:
Champion Shaghai Bobby will apparently have no cakewalk in his 3-year-old debut—at least on paper.  Todd Pletcher’s #1 prospect will face a graded stakes winner, two graded stakes placed runners, two listed stakes winners, and several other promising sophomores who could be sitting on a big race.  Shanghai Bobby will start on the rail for the Holy Bull (G3), which drew an unexpected field of ten. Full previews and a link to free PPs below// Rick Violette has decided to give recent Jimmy Winkfield Stakes winner Clawback a chance to stretch out. The exact race is undecided, but it very well could be away from New York considering the timing of the Withers (G3) in less than two weeks is not ideal.  Wherever he ends up it’s tough seeing Clawback excel at extra distance. Not that people pay attention to a horse’s dosage index much anymore, but a 7.00 is about the highest you’ll find of any possible Derby participant// Violette also mentioned that Carried Interest, who finished second to Overanalyze in his last race back in September, is gearing up for an allowance in February// Bob Baffert was pleased with Flashback’s workout in company at Santa Anita Wednesday morning. The colt is pointing to the Robert Lewis (G2) in a little over a week// The dust has fully settled from Monday’s Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn, and we now have excuses for several of the disappointing finishers.  Brown Almighty apparently had a “severe lung infection” and will be given another shot on the Derby trail in either the Risen Star (G2) or Southwest (G3).  Officer Alex lost a shoe according to trainer Lynn Whiting, and also suffered a poor break and wide trip.  He’ll give him another stakes try as well.  All of these excuses could be valid, but it’s not enough for me to back the colts in their next race// Always in a Tiz was arguably the most impressive in the Smarty Jones when finishing a hard charging third after ending up stuck behind horses on the rail. Trainer Dominick Schettino noted he galloped out ahead of the field past the wire, but that’s not always what it’s cracked up to be considering a lot of horses are gearing down. Always in a Tiz’s next race plans remain up in the air// more…
