Recap and thoughts on Kentucky Derby 139: Orb gets the trip, prevails in the slop

Chart: Equibase
Recaps: Bloodhorse  / DRF /
Beyer Speed Figure: 104
Post-Race Comments: Winners / Losing Trainers / Losing Jockeys

The Churchill Downs strip on the first Saturday in May of 2013 was dotted with puddles, deep, and officially listed “Sloppy- Sealed”. Eight of the nineteen entrants had previously raced on dirt labeled “good” or “sloppy” to varying degrees of success, but handicappers know that one off-track can be completely different from another.

With that and recent history in mind, it was conceivable to believe the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby could be won by an inconceivable entrant who would simply relish the conditions. Instead, it was the favorite Orb who delivered his trademark wide come-from-behind burst starting on the backstretch, going into the second turn and finally down the stretch passing fifteen foes when it was all said and done past the wire.

The victory gave Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey his first sniff of the roses while the industry applauded an old-school trainer known for never pushing undeserving colts along the Derby trail. His patience, clean record, and belief in his horse finally give thoroughbred fans a story they won’t be ashamed to read now and through the rest of the Triple Crown season.

It’s no secret that jockey Joel Rosario can ride. Indisputably the hottest jockey of 2013 will now be elevated to late night television appearances and national news features pushing his young legacy even closer to the all-time greats.

The second place finish of Golden Soul surprised most everyone except his trainer Dallas Stewart, who always preached the son of Perfect Soul wanted to go farther and could also excel in the slop. He will go next to the Belmont, perhaps representing Orb’s biggest threat to the Triple Crown.

Calvin Borel got what he wanted with an off-track and close to the rail post for Revolutionary, but the Louisiana Derby winner didn’t have a strong enough kick to catch the winner. Revolutionary will also sit out the Preakness and wait for the Belmont.

As always, the Kentucky Derby was not without its disappointments. The biggest “what-ifs” will undoubtedly come from those trainers and jockeys who would love a do over on a fast track. The result most likely would have been the same, but several prominent horses like Verrazano, Itsmyluckyday, and Goldencents were clearly spinning their wheels in the slop. Verrazano also suffered a gash on his hind leg, but the track and pace contributed more to his undoing than any superficial cut.

Will we handicappers ever learn that the Kentucky Derby will most likely always have an early fast pace? Since 2000, 11 of 14 Derbies have had an opening quarter below 23 flat and 12 of 14 a second quarter at or below 47 flat. Those times are blazing for a mile and a quarter race and of course favor mid to back-of-the-pack horses.

Some thought this trend would end in 2013 due to the new point system hopefully eliminating sprinters from entering, but when you have 19 horses in a race, the game plan for several will always be to try and steal the race up front. You can blame Mike Smith or the blinkers for Palace Malice’s surprising aggressiveness, but he was closely flanked by Verrazano, Goldencents, Oxbow, Vyjack, and Falling Sky at various moments of the race, all creating upfront pressure.

Congratulations to all those who cashed tickets Saturday and thanks for following the Derby trail on this site. It was a bumpy and unpredictable ride as usual, but we came out with a deserving winner who will hopefully end this awful Triple Crown drought.

Giant Finish crashes Fear the Kitten’s party// Carving not likely to be AE// Albarado to ride Golden Soul// No blow out for Itsmyluckyday

Summary:
Hopefully the connections of Fear the Kitten kept the receipts for their Derby hats as they may be of no use Saturday. In a near-last minute decision, owner Andy Cohen decided to throw Giant Finish, 3rd last time out in the Spiral (G3) at Turfway, into the Kentucky Derby mix. Giant Finish’s 10 points trump Fear the Kitten’s 6, which force the latter to enter as an also-eligible and hope for a defection before Friday. It appeared a second also-eligible was possible with the connections of Carving (2 points) showing interest to enter their colt during Wednesday’s scheduled draw. However, trainer Mike Puhich didn’t seem keen on the idea of waiting for two to drop out// It was also announced late Tuesday that Dallas Stewart has chosen Robby Albarado as the rider for Golden Soul. The team will be among the longest shots in the race, but if they happen to pull off a miracle get ready for the onslaught of stories on Albarado’s fairly recent transgressions// Somehow news that Ryan Moore was named to ride Lines of Battle was labeled “breaking” today but we actually knew that Friday. Lines of Battle arrived on the Churchill grounds early Wednesday morning// Eddie Plesa confirmed that Itsmyluckyday will not have a ‘blow out’ or short breeze between now and the Derby. Itsmyluckyday’s last work was Thursday and his overall time was a very slow 4-furlongs in 53 seconds flat// No serious workouts took place at Churchill Tuesday, but several people noted Falling Sky’s strong gallop. It is safe to assume he will be fairly aggressive in the early stages of the Derby. For gallop videos and interviews see the links below// Andrew Beyer theorizes that Todd Pletcher’s 1-for-31 record in the Kentucky Derby can be attributed to his training methods producing horses that perform better in races well spaced apart as opposed to the compact prep and Triple Crown schedules// Features on Kevin Krigger, Vyjack, Kelly Breen, Golden Soul, Joel Rosario, Orb, and much more below…

4 ruled out of Kentucky Derby// Golden Soul, Fear the Kitten make the cut// Orb steals Monday workout spotlight// Oxbow posts bullet// Will Take Charge breezes

Summary:
Derby week kicked off Monday with a flurry of defections, additions, and workouts. Bob Baffert announced his Derby hand is empty after deciding Govenor Charlie is not ready and Code West will point for the Peter Pan (G2). Todd Pletcher quickly stated Lexington Stakes (G2) winner Winning Cause will bypass the Run for the Roses and the connections of Tiz a Minister also concluded it was too much to ask of their colt. Those decisions allowed Dallas Stewart’s Golden Soul and Mike Maker’s Fear the Kitten to take over the open spots #19 and #20 respectively. Alan Garcia was named to ride Fear the Kitten, while Stewart was still mum on the jockey for Golden Soul. Both colts will go off as big price long shots, but cases can be made for both to be part of the superfecta mix. Golden Soul should like the added distance and has closed well in most of his races. Fear the Kitten is undoubtedly bred for the grass, but has won at Churchill on the dirt and also closed strong in a majority of his contests// It’s no secret Daily Racing Form’s Mike Welsch favors Orb for the Kentucky Derby. After his official four-furlong breeze Monday he said it was “reminiscent of Barbaro and Street Sense” before they won the roses. Welsch wasn’t the only one heaping praise on the workout as the backside was abuzz over the potential favorite lighting up the track with ease// Oxbow’s bullet move in five-furlongs was overshadowed by Orb’s work, but the final time doesn’t tell his whole story. Apparently Oxbow bore out five or six wide when going through the turn, which was a cause for concern for Welsch. His stablemate Will Take Charge had an even more troubling breeze as he labored towards the end and was essentially “shut down” with no gallop out. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas didn’t seem too upset and was pleased the time was slow as opposed to fast so close to the Derby. For reports and video see below// Several handicappers are choosing Vyjack as their sleeper. If you can comfortably cross out his dull Wood Memorial (G1) effort, then a case can be made. However, I believe the Wood exposed him as a notch below Verrazano and Normandy Invasion// If you want to get excited about the potential of striking it rich Saturday, check out SB Nation’s chart on Derby payouts from the past twelve years// much more…

Falling Sky, Vyjack, Golden Soul breeze 5 panels// Ryan Moore to ride Lines of Battle// Training schedules altered// Standings still a mystery

Summary:
None of the three key workouts Friday impressed DRF clocker Mike Welsch. Both Vyjack and Falling Sky needed considerable encouragement late, while Golden Soul’s move was labeled simply “average”. Their times and splits can be found below. Orb had a stiff gallop along with gate schooling and “continued to impress” while Govenor Charlie had a troubling stride and difficulty changing leads. The McPeek pair of Frac Daddy and Java’s War meanwhile continue to thrive according to Welsch. His full report linked below// There’s been little news from across the pond on UAE Derby (G2) winner Lines of Battle. We finally know that Ryan Moore will retain the mount, but an arrival date and training developments have not been given// With the high probability of showers Saturday afternoon and evening, Todd Pletcher decided to move scheduled workouts for a majority of his likely Derby entrants from Sunday to Saturday. Falling Sky’s Friday work was also the result of trying to beat potential muddy conditions// Bob Baffert postponed his arrival to Kentucky a few days, so we will not hear the Derby status of Govenor Charlie, Code West, and Power Broker until at least Saturday. The latter two colts were not even mentioned by Jay Privman in his latest update so their chances don’t look good. Meanwhile, Privman also writes Tiz a Minister’s likelihood of shipping to Kentucky for the Derby after his stakes try Saturday is slim, which is different from what we heard just days ago// more…

Itsmyluckyday goes long at Calder// Golden Soul works ahead of potential Derby start// Picks for Lexington Stakes// more…

Summary:
Two Kentucky Derby contenders had longer than normal breezes today. Itsmyluckyday worked a mile at Calder and the report from the Daily Racing Form reminds of us of how nice it is when Mike Welsch is present. Not only are there informative quotes from trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., who was more than pleased with the move, but Welsch makes the astute observation that the Calder course was “cut up pretty well” just before the renovation break// At Churchill Downs, Dallas Stewart sent Golden Soul out for a strong 6-furlong breeze. The colt currently sits at #23 in the point standings (or #21 depending on the leaderboard you look at) and Stewart thinks he’s “very credible”. Although Golden Soul’s recent prep outings are nothing to write home about, he was always closing and Stewart contends the more distance the better// A decision has still not been made on whether Falling Sky will start next in the Kentucky Derby, but the would-be rider is set in stone. Luis Saez, who rode Falling Sky to victory in a December allowance at Gulfstream, would get his first Derby mount aboard the son of Lion Heart// Several handicappers have weighed in on how they see Saturday’s Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland shaping up. Picks are linked below// Dave Tuley at the Daily Racing Form makes an argument of parlaying your Derby horse from race-to-race (in other words: betting the selection to win in each of the Triple Crown Races) as opposed to betting the Triple Crown wager beforehand offered by Wynn Las Vegas. He uses Verrazano’s 12-1 odds to win the Triple Crown as an example of where you would most likely make more money betting him to win in each leg of the Triple Crown// more…

Govenor Charlie’s bone scan negative, everything ok?// Goldencents works, continues to impress O’Neill// Churchill notes// Lexington Stakes PPs and previews// more…

Summary:
What would a Kentucky Derby be without a little injury mystique? This year’s one to worry about will be Govenor Charlie, who was sent to Rood and Riddle Equine hospital in Lexington Tuesday for a bone scan. Trainer Bob Baffert said the Sunland Derby (G3) winner’s “foot was bugging him a couple days ago” and the visit was just a precaution. The scan turned out negative and Govenor Charlie should be settled into his new stall at Churchill by Thursday. Still, you don’t like to hear a trainer say “we’ll play it be ear”// There is a slight possibility Baffert will point Code West, 6th in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and currently #21 in the standings, to the Derby but the colt is more likely to wait for the Peter Pan (G2) at Belmont// Goldencents put in a serious drill Wednesday at Santa Anita. Trainer Doug O’Neill is most concerned with the colt continuing to mature and relax in the early going. He believes Goldencents proved to have made great strides on that front in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), but the Kentucky Derby will surely be a tougher test. The son of Into Mischief is scheduled to have one more work on April 25 before shipping to Churchill// In other Churchill Downs news, Frac Daddy arrived on the grounds Wednesday morning and Chad Brown announced Normandy Invasion will have an official timed move on each of the next two Sundays. Dallas Stewart’s Golden Soul, currently #23 on the leaderboard, will work Thursday morning// The Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland drew 11 challengers, a majority of whom will not move onto the Derby even with a win and requisite points. Of course that’s what their connections say for now. Links to PPs and preview can be found below// more…

Super Ninety Nine heading back to Oaklawn?// Excuses for Capo Bastone// Bullet for Oxbow// New rankings// more…

News Summary:
Both Beyer and BRIS speed ratings came back 101 for Super Ninety Nine, which are his second consecutive triple digit figures and place him towards the top of his class. Still, the sloppy Oaklawn track will keep his victory in the Southwest questionable for many. Super Ninety Nine could return to Oaklawn for the Arkansas Derby (G1) April 13// D. Wayne Lukas has no excuses for Channel Isle or Will Take Charge who ended up 4th and 6th respectively in the Southwest. He said both colts could return for the Rebel March 16// Todd Pletcher says Capo Bastone’s slow final time in his return race Saturday can be attributed to having to race wide, but a 69 Beyer is extremely low and suggests the colt is a notch below. Pletcher said the Rebel is a strong possibility for his next race// Al Stall’s two Risen Star (G2) entrants may not make the gate Saturday due to poor post positions. Sunbean, an also-eligible, was also entered in the Gentilly Stakes, while the connections of Departing don’t seem keen on having his stakes debut start on the far outside// Dallas Stewart thinks Golden Soul will improve with the added distance of the Risen Star and a little more pace, while trainers Tom Amoss and Steve Asmussen don’t seem overly confident with their starters Mylute and Proud Strike// PPs and preview articles for Saturday’s Risen Star and Fountain of Youth can be found below// New rankings from Steve Haskin and Jerry Bossert// Power Broker had his second official breeze since the layoff Tuesday morning at Santa Anita, while Oxbow registered the quickest 4-furlong move of 18 horses at Oaklawn// more…
