Kentucky Derby contenders deal with sloppy Churchill track// Derby Trial PPs and previews// Tiz a Minister set for Snow Chief// more…

Summary:
Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs was predominantly wet and cool. By the time the 8:30am special training session opened the track was sealed and sloppy. Orb, Vyjack, Black Onyx, Mylute, Oxbow, Winning Cause, Normandy Invasion, Falling Sky, and Charming Kitten beat the rain by galloping early, while Verrazano, Palace Malice, Revolutionary, Overanalyze, and Govenor Charlie all endured the sloppy conditions. It was Orb’s first steps on the Churchill surface and Mike Welsch said he looked strong. Revolutionary was another standout for him. For comments on all of the gallopers you can see the DRF Clocker Report article and video linked below plus find other links to the actual gallops from Churchill Downs// Todd Pletcher said it will be at least until Sunday before he makes a decision on whether to run Winning Cause in the Derby. Pletcher is planning on breezing all six of his Derby contenders that day// 9 are set for the Derby Trial Stakes (G3) this Saturday at Churchill Downs. As expected, Titletown Five is among the starters with hopes of wheeling back one week later in the Derby. Links to PPs and previews can be found below// Tiz a Minister, currently #22 on the Derby standings, was entered in the Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park. Trainer Paul Aguirre still maintains that Tiz a Minister will start in the Derby as long as he’s eligible// A reminder: there’s a separate page for the top 23 Kentucky Derby contenders that includes PPs, race replays, pedigree info, and more. Weekend Review: Verrazano, 4 other Kentucky Derby starters work at Churchill// Orb breezes in Florida// Baffert shakes up standings// Coolmore Lexington results and figs// more…

Summary:
Sunday was a day of important workouts at Churchill Downs with Verrazano, Revolutionary, Mylute, Normandy Invasion, and Will Take Charge all getting serious time on the strip. Likely morning line favorite Verrazano was the headliner with Gary Stevens the surprising rider. Apparently Verrazano was slow in the early going and needed some urging to catch up to his stablemate. Once he did, the two were essentially neck and neck down most of the stretch. Mike Welsch from the Daily Racing Form labeled the work simply “Good, not a wow”. Trainer Todd Pletcher on the other hand said it was “excellent” and Verrazano “got over the track nicely”// Revolutionary finished his 4-furlong work the best of the bunch according to Welsch. Three-time Derby winner Calvin Borel guided the son of War Pass along the rail most of the way as expected. Pletcher said, “we might as well let him get used to it”// Rosie Napravnik was aboard Mylute who Welsch said went well, although he shut down just after the wire. His final time of 47:80 was the second fastest of 81 horses going the same 4-fulrong distance// Normandy Invasion was “a little rank” in the early going of his 4-panel breeze, but eventually settled down. Welsch explains trainer Chad Brown has been trying to get Normandy Invasion more forwardly placed in the early stages of his races// D. Wayne Lukas’ Will Take Charge made a strong closing move during his extended one mile breeze, although jockey Jon Court had to urge him along in the final strides// Over at Payson Park in Florida, Orb had an official 5-furlong work before traveling to Kentucky. Trainer Shug McGaughey said it was “perfect” seeing as Orb saved his best strides for the end// Full workout times, reports, and videos from Sunday can be found below// The point standings continue to be a topic of debate and confusion mainly due to Bob Baffert, who seems to force the spotlight on himself this time of year. Just last week he was quoted as saying, “and then there was one,” alluding to Govenor Charlie representing his lone Kentucky Derby starter. Now, Baffert is not ruling out four of his trainees- Super Ninety Nine (#18), Den’s Legacy (#20), Code West (#23), and Power Broker (#27). The first two are set to work at Santa Anita Wednesday, after which Baffert will decide whether to point for the Derby or not. The latter two colts are already at Churchill, but Baffert will make a decision on their status later in the week when he can observe them in person// Todd Pletcher was mum on next race plans for Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G3) winner Winning Cause. He said a decision will be made as late as next weekend// As expected, Falling Sky will officially go to the Kentucky Derby, “as long as he breezes like we want him to” according to trainer John Terranova// Trainer Paul Aguirre said Sunday that Tiz a Minister (currently #24) will go to the Derby if he’s eligible. The colt is set to race Saturday at Hollywood Park, but Aguirre has no reservations about wheeling him back in just a week if need be// more…

Itsmyluckyday goes long at Calder// Golden Soul works ahead of potential Derby start// Picks for Lexington Stakes// more…

Summary:
Two Kentucky Derby contenders had longer than normal breezes today. Itsmyluckyday worked a mile at Calder and the report from the Daily Racing Form reminds of us of how nice it is when Mike Welsch is present. Not only are there informative quotes from trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., who was more than pleased with the move, but Welsch makes the astute observation that the Calder course was “cut up pretty well” just before the renovation break// At Churchill Downs, Dallas Stewart sent Golden Soul out for a strong 6-furlong breeze. The colt currently sits at #23 in the point standings (or #21 depending on the leaderboard you look at) and Stewart thinks he’s “very credible”. Although Golden Soul’s recent prep outings are nothing to write home about, he was always closing and Stewart contends the more distance the better// A decision has still not been made on whether Falling Sky will start next in the Kentucky Derby, but the would-be rider is set in stone. Luis Saez, who rode Falling Sky to victory in a December allowance at Gulfstream, would get his first Derby mount aboard the son of Lion Heart// Several handicappers have weighed in on how they see Saturday’s Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland shaping up. Picks are linked below// Dave Tuley at the Daily Racing Form makes an argument of parlaying your Derby horse from race-to-race (in other words: betting the selection to win in each of the Triple Crown Races) as opposed to betting the Triple Crown wager beforehand offered by Wynn Las Vegas. He uses Verrazano’s 12-1 odds to win the Triple Crown as an example of where you would most likely make more money betting him to win in each leg of the Triple Crown// more…

Summary:
WinStar Farm and Todd Pletcher chose three-time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel for riding duty on Revolutionary. The WinStar press release says the fan poll “helped affirm” the decision, even though Rosie Napravnik was the first choice… not sure how that works?// Mike Smith gets the call on recent Blue Grass (G1) runner-up Palace Malice. Garrett Gomez rode the colt on Saturday but was already committed to ride Vyjack. Gomez and his agent could be kicking themselves for making a quick decision, especially considering the jockey could have also been in the running for Revolutionary// Verrazano took his first steps on the Churchill track Monday, and according to the always-descriptive Todd Pletcher, “he galloped nicely”. Pletcher indicated he has penciled April 21 and April 28 as official breeze dates for both Verrazano and Revolutionary. His other three likely Derby entrants- Charming Kitten, Overanalyze, and Palace Malice- will each have one official work before the Derby on April 28// Normandy Invasion is settling into his surroundings at Churchill and will have two workouts before the Derby, most likely over the two remaining weekends// D. Wayne Lukas is also planning two works for Will Take Charge and either one or two for Oxbow, who recently finished a disappointing 5th in the Arkansas Derby (G1)// Considering how desperate most owners and trainers are to have a horse in the Kentucky Derby gate, it’s amazing how many would actually qualify this year but are instead bypassing the opportunity. At least four horses that hold enough points to get in will skip America’s greatest race (Uncaptured, Departing, West Hills Giant, Merit Man). That makes this Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington (G3) and the following week’s Derby Trial (G3) essentially “win and your in” type races. Not that any potential winner of those races would definitely move onto the Derby, but Cerro and Titletown Five have connections who’ve indicated it is a possibility// Get ready for the onslaught of stories on how weak this year’s Derby field will be. The same theme creeps up every year, but this prospective cast does seem to lack a lot of star power. Steve Haskin alludes to the slow times of recent preps in his weekly Derby Dozen column, and says the race will simply come down to who’s peaking at the right moment. Morning workouts and gallops in the weeks between now and May 4th will be critical// more…

CTD Analysis: Normandy Invasion’s strong runner-up finish in last week’s Wood Memorial (G1) went a long way to quiet all the Remsen (G2) bashers, but Overanalyze’s 4 1/4 length victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) should all but silence them. The Remsen, a 1 1/8 mile race for two-year-olds in late November has failed to be a key race in recent Kentucky Derbies, and it looked as if the trend would continue with the continuous off-the-board performances of it’s top three finishers in the early part of the year. Now the Remsen looks to be responsible for two Derby starters, which is more than such storied juvenile races as the Champagne (G1), CashCall Futurity (G1), and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).
You will probably still get a good price on Overanalyze in the Kentucky Derby. The Beyer speed figure from the Arkansas Derby didn’t crack 90 (88), which puts the colt on the very low end of recent prep winners. If you don’t subscribe to Beyer, perhaps the BRIS figure of 96 gives you a little more comfort, not to mention the relative ease Overanalyze put away nine rivals after racing wide most of the way. The Oaklawn circuit has taken its share of lumps this Derby prep season and you have to be skeptical of what the future holds for most the Arkansas Derby (G1) entrants, but visually you can’t ask anything more from Overanalyze.
Runner-up Frac Daddy earned enough points to move onto Churchill Downs, but I wouldn’t label his performance promising seeing as he had the perfect inside stalking trip yet was still beaten in a slow race by over four lengths. It was not the most dissapointing display however, as that award goes to Oxbow who attempted a new off-the-pace running style that turned out to be a disaster. The colt clearly did not like watching horses in front of him- or the dirt in his face for that matter- and never got into the race. Nevertheless trainer D. Wayne Lukas will still point for the Kentucky Derby (G1) and likely plan for a more forward position in the early going.

Blue Grass (G1)
Winner (pts): Java’s War (100)
2nd, 3rd, 4th (pts): Palace Malice (40), Charming Kitten (20), Rydilluc (10)
Chart: Equibase

Beyer/BRIS: 89/96
Recaps: Bloodhorse / DRF / Brisnet
CTD Analysis: Almost getting left in the gate was no bother to jockey Julien Leparoux and Java’s War in the Blue Gras Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Luckily, Java’s War is the closing type that likes to bide his time in the back before making a big burst down the stretch. He did just that Saturday after the 3/4 pole by picking off all foes in front of him one-by-one.
What did we learn from Java’s War’s performance and the Blue Grass in general? Like recent years, probably not much. Keeneland’s Polytrack surface is kind to closers and can take its toll on the frontrunners by the time they get into the stretch. That fact was painfully evident as favored Rydilluc relinquished the lead to three horses, including the winner, in the late going. Moreover, a good or poor performance doesn’t necessarily translate to the same happening at Churchill Downs three weeks later. Mark Casse was rightfully disappointed with Uncaptured 10th place finish and is most likely skipping the Derby despite having the points. Many would argue the Blue Grass is proof Uncaptured has digressed from two to three, but there’s plenty of instances where horses run night and day differences between Keeneland and Churchill Downs. Plus, we know Uncaptured likes the Churchill surface based on his two graded stakes victories last Fall.
Back to the winner, Java’s War’s best race is still probably the runner-up finish to likely Kentucky Derby favorite Verrazano in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in March. That race was on dirt and also generated a career-best Beyer speed figure of 96. Still, even that performance is not enough to put him in the top five of Derby choices, however a deep closer can always surprise if the race falls apart from a hot pace.
2nd place Palace Malice will move onto the Derby, but how serious can we take a horse that finished 7th (albeit a troubled trip) and 3rd in his last dirt outings against questionable company?
Charming Kitten, who made a nice wide late move, got the show and currently sits as the last one in the Derby. How much the son of Kitten’s Joy will enjoy the Churchill dirt and step up in company will be a point of contention for many.

Weekend News Summary
The Churchill Downs backside is filling up with Kentucky Derby starters earlier than usual. Verrazano, Overanalyze, and Normandy Invasion were the latest arrivals Sunday// Vyjack has been hanging out in a hyperbaric chamber recently after suffering a lung infection and mucus buildup after the Wood Memorial (G1). Trainer Rudy Rodriguez was hoping Vyjack could fly into Louisville with the Sunday arrivals from New York, but first has to appear before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in order to get a license. The in-person requirement is due to Rodriguez having two recent medication violations in New York. Plans are still to have the Vyjack ready for the Derby// With a number of quick defection announcements Saturday and Sunday, several horses that were outside the top 20 in points are now gearing up for the longest and toughest race of their life. Charming Kitten makes the cut, which gives Todd Pletcher five starters. No word from Bob Baffert (surprise, surprise) on whether Super Ninety Nine, currently #18 in the standings, will make the trip. It is very likely Baffert will only saddle one horse, Sunland Derby (G3) winner Govenor Charlie, in the Kentucky Derby// Falling Sky is another within the top 20 whose connections may opt out of the Run for the Roses// Although there are still two Kentucky Derby point races to run, now is the time for workouts to play just as an important role in the news cycle. There were four key works over the weekend from Orb, Mylute, Black Onyx, and Will Take Charge. Reports and details below// On one hand, you have to give credit to WinStar Farms for trying to mix things up by starting a public poll on who should ride Revolutionary in the Kentucky Derby. On the other hand, you have to wonder what the jockeys and trainer Todd Pletcher think of possibly being the bad guy (or gal) who went against the people’s choice. I imagine they’ll get over it// The Coolmore Lexington (G3) Saturday represents a “Wild Card” race along the Kentucky Derby point schedule, and could have some serious implications. The winner gets 20 points, which is currently the exact cutoff number to make the Derby gate, although a tiebreaker based on non-restricted stakes earnings would have to take effect seeing as several horses have 20 points. Code West wouldn’t have to worry about a tiebreaker if he were to hit the board, having accrued 20 points already// more…

Castellano on ‘Invasion’, Gomez on Vyjack for Kentucky Derby// News and picks for Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass// 3 key workouts// more…

Summary:
A day after the major jockey dilemma of the 2013 Kentucky Derby was resolved, more contender mounts were finalized Thursday. After John Velazquez’s decision was made to ride Verrazano instead of Orb, attention turned to Javier Castellano and his choice between Wood Memorial (G1) runner-up Normandy Invasion and Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Revolutionary. He chose Normandy Invasion primarily because of how close he was to beating likely Derby favorite Verrazano. Todd Pletcher says he’ll wait until after the weekend to decide who gets the leg up on Revolutionary. Top jocks still available include Rafael Bejarano, Mike Smith, Rosie Napravnik, and three-time winner Calvin Borel. It won’t be Garrett Gomez, who committed Thursday to riding Wood third place finisher Vyjack. Perhaps Gomez was forced to show his hand, but I would think he’d have a good chance of getting the call on Revolutionary, a colt who is generally more highly regarded. Too late now// Handicappers are beginning to weigh in on Saturday’s Derby point races. To be honest, I don’t find analyzing the Blue Grass (G1) a very calming experience. A case can be made for and against almost all of the entrants and given the polytrack surface and recent history of the race, everything points to this being a coin toss. Picks for both the Blue Grass and Arkansas Derby can be found below// Rydilluc had an official 7-furlong breeze Saturday so it was bit surprising when another official workout popped up Thursday, two days ahead of the Blue Grass. Trainer Gary Contessa sent the son of Medaglia d’Oro for a short 3-furlong work he called “a walk in the park”// Itsmyluckyday, a colt who is flying a bit under the radar after his runner-up finish in the Florida Derby (G1), posted a 5-furlong work at Calder Thursday// On the West Coast, Sunland Derby (G3) victor Govenor Charlie put in serious preparations at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert// more…

Summary:
The Blue Grass (G1) drew a full field as expected with Uncaptured installed as the 7-2 lukewarm favorite. A link to PPs and previews can be found below// The Arkansas Derby (G1) will have ten in the gate. Somewhat surprisingly, recent allowance winner War Academy is the 2-1 favorite over graded stakes winner Oxbow. I don’t like the price on the favorite at all, however feel he’s ready for a huge performance Saturday at Hot Springs. PPs and previews are also below// John Velazquez initiated a little version of musical chairs Wednesday with the announcement he will ride Verrazano in the Kentucky Derby. That decision gives the mount on Florida Derby (G1) winner Orb to Joel Rosario thus leaving a temporary jockey vacancy for Vyjack// We knew Velazquez would not return to action until Derby week, but now we know the exact day won’t be until Wednesday. That means Velazquez will have just three days of riding before the Kentucky Derby- and that’s if everything goes according to plan// It wouldn’t be a modern day Kentucky Derby without a little negative publicity going in.
