Weekend Derby prep recap// Gemologist, Currency Swap to meet in allowance// Updated Graded Earnings & CTD Contenders lists

Creative Cause winning the San Felipe.

With just eight weeks left until the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, many fans and handicappers begin to separate the real contenders from the pretenders.  Oftentimes, the pretenders still make the Derby gate, and in some cases actually win the Roses if the stars align. Still, the process of arranging prospects from the top shelf to the bottom is not only an enjoyable exercise, but time saving come Derby week.

Saturday and Sunday offered four graded stakes for 3-year-olds hoping to take the next step towards Churchill Downs in May and also an opportunity for us to compare and assess where things stand.  Undoubtedly, the toughest field of the weekend and possibly all year belonged to the San Felipe (G2) Saturday at Santa Anita.  The group consisted of both accomplished horses and exciting new prospects and for the most part did not disappoint with the top two betting selections dueling it out in the stretch.

The second favorite and eventual winner Creative Cause possessed a solid foundation and multiple graded wins, while favored Bodemeister came into the race off an eye-popping maiden victory.  Although both horses had a difficult time running straight down the stretch, they were moving quick and well ahead of the rest of the group. Creative Cause earned an impressive 102 Beyer Speed figure with Bodemeister just a point less at 101.

Doubters have noted both horses ran greenly and were aided by a “soft pace”. I disagree, especially with the pace excuse.  An opening quarter of 22.95 is honest for a route, not to mention Creative Cause began the race off the pace in the middle of the pack and had to chase down Bodemeister who was in a better spot.  As for running crooked, plenty of Derby winners have failed to run a straight line.  it is especially of no concern for Bodemeister who was making just his third start and at his longest distance yet.  Creative Cause’s veering brings more caution seeing as it was his 7th race, but he corrected himself late and hit the wire very strong to get the job done over a talented bunch.

Midnight Transfer was more than two lengths back of Bodemeister for a third place finish- not bad for a two-turn debut, but I still can’ see him ever catching up.  Grade 1 winner Liaison put in a decent effort for 4th, but I would keep him on the mid to lower shelf as he has not proven much on dirt.  Empire Way was perhaps the biggest letdown finishing next to last.  The full-brother to Breeders’ Cup winner Royal Delta is not a true contender. Creative Cause and Bodemeister will most likely stage a rematch in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) next.

With the defection of Take Charge Indy, the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) lost some luster.  The field was mostly a combination of the same mid-level cast from the Sam Davis (G3) and unproven maiden and minor stakes winners. Prospective just missed winning the Sam Davis, but got his revenge Saturday by gutting out a stretch duel that went back and forth with Golden Ticket.  His Beyer number came back 88, which is not only in stark contrast with the San Felipe, but well below the average figures for recent preps.  Even if you don’t subscribe to the numbers, it’s hard to argue Prospective beat any serious contenders. Nonetheless he now has enough earnings for a spot in the Kentucky Derby gate.

Todd Pletcher’s Spring Hill Farm, a maiden winner, was the post time favorite, but had a rough start when he hit the gate and was pushed in tight.  He could improve from the 4th place effort next time out, but time is running out for any Derby dreams to come to fruition.

The star attractions for the short 7-furlong Swale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream were graded stakes winner Motor City and graded stakes placed Ever So Lucky, yet it was another quiet graded stakes placed runner Trinniberg who stole the show. Anyone who followed the juvenile stakes in the Summer and Fall will remember Trinniberg was very game and just missed in the Hopeful (G1) and Nashua (G2).  The 4-month layoff seemed to help as he was in control the entire running of the Swale and ended up a dominant 6-length winner.  Trainer Bisnath Parboo says all options are open for Trinniberg’s next race, and he could try a stretch out.  Looking at his pedigree, Trinniberg may not relish anything past a mile.

Longshot Hello Prince finished second with Ever So Lucky getting the show.   The latter’s trainer Jonathan Sheppard was pleased with his effort and said it will serve the colt well next time out going longer.  Motor City was a non-factor and finished 8th.

You normally don’t expect serious contenders to come out of the Palm Beach Stakes (G3), which is on turf at Gulfstream Park, however Sunday’s running could produce two prospects. Howe Great had a perfect stalking trip on the inside and convincingly held off a grinding Dullahan who did come four wide on the far turn. Howe Great and Dullahan will both point for the Bluegrass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland before hopefully heading to the Derby.  Dullahan already has the earnings and has shown he fares well on dirt when finishing 4th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile behind Union Rags, Hansen, and Creative Cause.  Howe Great won his maiden on dirt, but still has question marks on that surface against tough competition. He did remind us he can rate just off the pace, which was a different style from his previous two wins and a good one to possess for the Derby.

In other weekend news, loads of leading Derby contenders were on the work tab, including early favorite Union Rags and both Southwest (G3) winners Secret Circle and Castaway.  Stories and times below// It’s worth noting Overdriven had his first official workout since his injury.  The undefeated Grade 2 winner hasn’t raced since July and is not listed on the current Graded Earnings list so it’s unlikely he’s a contender// In surprising news Gemologist, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), will make his 3-year-old debut in a one mile allowance at Gulfstream instead of the Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn. WinStar Farm who owns the colt were quoted as saying they like the small field size of the allowance and did not like the fact Gemologist would have to van back from Arkansas.  He’ll face Hopeful (G1) winner Currency Swap, who will also be making his sophomore debut// Gemologist’s defection from Rebel could open up a spot for promising maiden winner Kid Sidney, although he’s still on the outside looking in of the expected full field.

Alpha gets 90 Beyer from Withers// Overdriven officially off trail// Southwest contenders breeze// Gemologist returns to work tab

It appears most runners from Saturday’s Derby preps are in good order Sunday.  Alpha, the winner who grabbed the most headlines, will be pointed to just one more race before the Kentucky Derby- either the Gotham (G3) or Wood Memorial (G1)// Gemologist, the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner at Churchill Downs in November, finally returned to the work tab with a short and slow breeze.  Other than Todd Pletcher mentioning the colt will have two races before the Derby, specifics are unknown// Another Pletcher contender was officially ruled off the Derby trail Sunday.  Overdriven, winner of the Sanford (G2) at Saratoga in July and injured in August, will not have enough time to prepare for Derby.  That leaves owner Mike Repole of Uncle Mo/Stay Thirsty fame with only one possible contender in Our Entourage.  That prospect will race on turf for his 3-year-old debut and then point for the Wood Memorial (G1)// Several contenders for the Southwest (G3) worked at Oaklawn Sunday, including Smarty Jones Stakes winner Junebugred who put in a strong 5-panel move// Lost amid all Saturday’s key results was that Cyber Secret returned to winning ways at Oaklawn and could be headed to the Rebel (G2) or Arkansas Derby (G1) next.  The colt earned a 96 Beyer figure from the allowance which immediately puts him ahead of the other 3-year-olds on that circuit// Another race that didn’t get much attention Saturday was the 5-furlong Needles stakes at Gulfstream.  Musical Flair made his return from a four-month layoff to win by 3/4 lengths in come-from-behind fashion. Trainer Sal Santoro says he’ll most likely point Musical Flair to the Fountain of Youth (G2), where he would face very stiff competition in Union Rags, Hansen, and others.

Notable Performers & Week In Review: 8/16- 8/21

All was quiet on the graded stakes front, but CTD NP and Futurity (G1) winner Jack’s In The Deck passed his first allowance test and we have an exciting maiden breaker who is a full brother to the 3rd favorite in last year’s Kentucky Derby…

Notable Performer

Sweet Swap
8/20/11 Del Mar Maiden Special Weight
Trainer: John Sadler

Chart: Equibase

Beyer/BRIS Speed: 82/94
Articles: DRF

Sweet Swap lived up to his hype and favoritism on Saturday at Del Mar.  In his debut for trainer John Sadler, who also handled the colt’s full brother Sidney’s Candy before he was sold earlier this year, Sweet Swap was able to lead at every call in the 5 1/2 furlong maiden contest.  Essentially the first horse in the carousel, he was able to stretch his winning margin to almost 2 lengths.  The final time of 1:03.76 was just over a second slower than the track record set by his brother.

Sidney’s Candy was a serious contender on the 2010 Derby Trail when he won all of his California preps including the 9 furlong Santa Anita Derby.  Most of his major scores have come on synthetic or turf, but he is a graded winner on all three surfaces.  Sweet Swap's and Sidney’s Candy’s sire Candy Ride was also versatile by winning on both turf and dirt and at distances up to 10 furlongs.

Their dam was never a winner, but she was by the famous Storm Cat. It’s worth noting Storm Cat still ranks #2 on the current broodmare sire list, with 2011 Kentucky Derby favorite and 9 furlong winner Dialed In contributing to the those high earnings.

The Juvenile graded stakes schedule heads back to the West Coast Sunday with the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar.  Majestic City, the leader of the California 2-year-old division, will skip it and prepare for Del Mar Futurity (G1) in September.

This week’s Notable Performers are out of the same maiden special race at Saratoga…

Notable Performances:

J C’s Pride
7/27/11 Saratoga Maiden Special chart / video / Beyer: 101 / BRIS: 107
Trainer: Robert Barbara
Jockey: Jose Lezcano
Articles: Saratogian / DRF / TTimes / Bloodhorse / Hand Rides [half way down] (Bloodhorse) / J C’s Pride sets record [halfway down] (Albany Times Union)

A bettor now has many tools at his or her disposal to decipher 2-year-old maiden races: pedigree stats, workout reports, trainer stats, and even advanced stride measurements.

None of those tools were really needed to determine the favorite in the third race at Saratoga last Wednesday.

J C’s Pride came into the race exiting a maiden special won by arguably the best 2-year-old in the nation Overdriven.  In that race J C’s Pride beat the 3rd place finisher by over 13 lengths and recorded a top 5 Beyer speed figure among all racing juveniles.

In his 2nd test on Wednesday he didn’t spring from the gate on fire- he was scorching.  The final time of 56.54 set a track record for 5 furlongs at prestigious Saratoga.

There are murmurs J C’s Pride will likely be sold, but a deal has not been published yet.

The colt has already changed owners three times at various auctions, topping out at $200,000 earlier this year.  He’s the son of Henny Hughes, who also had success at Saratoga by winning the Saratoga Special Stakes and finishing 2nd in the Hopeful.  Although he finished a strong second in the 1 1/16 mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he was best suited at sprints.  J C’s Pride is out of a Silver Deputy mare who is a half sister to 9 furlong grade 3 winner Blind Date.

His catalog page can be viewed here

Mr. Style
7/27/11 Saratoga Maiden Special chart / video / Beyer: 91
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: John Velazquez

Mr. Style was in the unfortunate position of chasing the track record setter around the oval, but wound up almost 9 lengths clear of the rest of the field. His Beyer speed figure for that debut was a very respectable 91.  He didn’t quite level off until midway down the stretch, but even a professional lead change would not have been enough to win.

Another Pletcher/Velazquez juvenile with tons of potential, Mr. Style is the son of Bluegrass Cat, a serious Kentucky Derby trail participant in 2006 who finished second in the big race to the mighty Barbaro and was later 2nd in the Belmont. His mother is a Tiznow mare who is a half sister to a six furlong stakes winner.

Mr. Style was a $135,000 purchase as a 2-year-old in training. His catalog page can be viewed here

Graded Stakes Review

The Sanford (G2)
Winner: Overdriven (NP) chart / video / Beyer: 93 / BRIS: 99
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: John Velazquez
Wrap-up articles: NYRA / Bloodhorse / DRF / Brisnet

Overdriven was “green”, “more professional than dazzling”, and even “appeared like a sprinter”.  Those were some of the negative comments immediately following his Grade 2 score in the Sanford at Saratoga Sunday.

The predictable Uncle Mo comparisons began to sprout as well seeing as the connections and track form a familiar tale.  Will he romp in the Hopeful in September, move on to toy with the field in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, and set a path towards the First Saturday in May?

I will try to stay away from both camps for the time being and judge the race at face-value. In just his second start, Overdriven proved he was undoubtedly in a league of his own compared to the rest of the quality field that included a grade 2 winner, two graded stakes placed runners, and several impressive maiden winners.

He was a little more keen from the get go, staying closer to the pacesetter and making his passing move earlier before the turn.  Similar to his maiden win, Overdriven was never really challenged in the stretch and drew off to a comfortable win.  The final time of 1:10.60 was decent, not spectacular for the day, but a Beyer figure of 93 still gave him a top five performance among all 2-year-olds.

As for the distance questions, you simply can’t tell at this point.  In an earlier entry I did find pedigree signs that indicated he can stretch out-- how far we’ll just have to wait and see.

Notable Performance:

Secret Circle
7/23/11 Del Mar Maiden Special chart / video / Beyer: 97 / BRIS: 107
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Rafael Bejarano
Articles: DRF / Horseracing Nation

Bob Baffert continued to flex his 2-year-old muscle on the West Coast with first-timer Secret Circle, who made a mockery of a 10 horse maiden field at Del Mar. You can tell the consistent gate training Baffert employs pays off by the way Secret Circle spurts from the gate.  He was able to stay close to the rail the entire trip and really opens up in the final furlong. The final time of 1:03.40 was less than a second off the track record set by Sidney’s Candy and Secret Circle earned the 3rd highest 2-year-old Beyer of the year at 97.

Baffert was non-committal on next race plans as usual, but left the door open for the Del Mar Futurity or shipping to Saratoga (presumably for the Hopeful).  Either spot would place the colt against one of the top two 2-year-olds in the country- Majestic City in the West or Overdriven in the East.

Secret Circle most likely wants added distance.  He’s the son of Eddington who was on the Triple Crown Trail in 2004 with 3rd place finishes in the Gotham and Wood Memorial before a 3rd in the Preakness and 4th in the Belmont. Eddington’s biggest score would come later in the 8.5 furlong Pimlico Special and a graded turf win at 9 furlongs. Secret Circle is out of a stakes winning Dixieland Band mare who won at 8.5 furlongs on turf.

Secret Circle was sold at the OBS 2-year-olds in training sale for $165,000. You can see his catalog page here

The Holiday weekend offered lots of action in the Juvenile division, including the first graded stakes of the year. Let’s get to it…

Graded Stakes Results:

Futurity S. (G2)
Winner: Jack’s In The Deck chart / video / Beyer: 69 / BRIS: 87
Trainer: Robin Graham
Jockey: Joe Bravo
Wrap-up articles: NYRA / DRF / Bloodhorse

Nothing like having your horse break his maiden in a prestigious grade 2 at Belmont.  That’s exactly what Skeedattle Stable’s Jack’s In The Deck did Sunday against a short field of 5 other juveniles.  Second favorite Team Six set the early lead but began to sputter into the stretch.  It appeared favored Tarpy’s Goal (CTD NP) was poised to make a move toward the front but he began to veer towards the stands.  That parted the seas for Jack’s In The Deck to split horses and hit the wire 4 lengths ahead.

Jack’s In The Deck is a son of Love of Money, a grade 2 winner at 1 1/8 miles.  The unraced dam is by Partner’s Hero who was best sprinting. For more info on his breeding you can read the TrueNicks article here.

While the breeding is modest and his stretch-out potential questionable, we’ll make him a CTD NP based on his big performance.

Bashford Manor S. (G3)
Winner: Exfactor (CTD NP) chart / video / Beyer: 82 / BRIS: 89
Trainer: Bernard Flint
Jockey: Calvin Borel

Taking advantage of a hot pace, Exfactor and Calvin Borel were able to begin the Bashford Manor Stakes in the back of the pack and slowly pick off the 6 challengers to win the first graded race for 2-year-olds.  Showing quick speed in his debut win, it was somewhat of a surprising tactic to hold him back Saturday, but it paid off and could pay off in spades further down the road.

He’ll head to Saratoga for a still to be determined race.  Quotes from trainer Bernie Flint were exuberant which is understandable, but confidence in the Breeders Cup Juvenile at this stage seems a little hasty.  The local newspaper even put “Derby 2012” in the headline, which doing so in July is especially premature.

For more info on Exfactor and his breeding read the entry from June 14th here

Perhaps I need to see a head-on view, but it appears Sum Of The Parts was about to get going down the stretch just before Exfactor and Calvin Borel came into his lane.  Neither the chart or articles mention any interference, but I’m inclined to give Sum Of The Parts another chance in his next one.

Overdriven
7/1/11 Belmont Maiden Special Weight: chart / video / Beyer: 100 / BRIS: 111
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: John Velazquez

From the same team that brought us Uncle Mo (Pletcher/Velazquez/Repole), we now have a 2-year-old maiden breaker with the first triple digit Beyer speed figure of the year.  The blistering final time was less than three quarters of a second off the track record-- and Overdriven was merely flashed the whip.  Breaking awkward from the start he eventually came up to track behind J C’s Pride in the backstretch.  After the final turn he was encouraged by jockey John Velazquez to overtake the pacesetter and finish clear by 3 ½ lengths. It should be noted, while J C’s Pride finished a well beaten 2nd, he was still 13 lengths ahead of the others and wound up with a high debut Beyer of 89.

Pletcher stated he was impressed with Overdriven's performance and will point to the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga with either the Sanford (G2) or just training in between.

A $350,000 yearling purchase, Overdriven is a half-brother to Smooth Air who was a multiple grade 2 winner and Kentucky Derby entry.  His big scores came in distances from 7 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles, and along the Derby Trail he won the Hutcheson and finished 2nd in the Florida Derby.

Overdriven’s sire is the successful Tale Of The Cat, whose runners have excelled at multiple distances and surfaces.

Note: The Pletcher/Velazquez/Repole tandem also had another impressive maiden winner in the 4th race that day by the name of Zow.

Article: Hopeful the goal for Overdriven [Half-way down article] (DRF)

Hogy
7/2/11 Arlington Park Allowance Optional Claiming: chart / video / Beyer:85 / BRIS: 101
Trainer: Joel Berndt
Jockey: Florent Geroux

Hogy was able to stay undefeated by winning his second try at Arlington Park Saturday.  He allowed a speed duel to ensue up front and professionally bided his time before kicking into gear down the lane.  With the first 2-year-old stakes at Arlington still 3 months away, you have to believe his connections will move him to another circuit in the near future.

Hogy is the son of Offlee Wild, who was a fixture on the Derby Trail in 2003 by winning the Holy Bull and finishing 3rd in the Bluegrass before ending up 12th in the Kentucky Derby.  His most notable win would come 2 years later in the grade 1 Suburban at the Derby distance of 1 1/4 miles.  Hogy’s damsire Petionville also tried out on the Derby Trail with a win in the Louisiana Derby before lackluster performances in the Illinois Derby and Santa Anita Derby.  He would later win the Ohio Derby at 1 1/8 miles.
